Let \(F\) be an algebraically closed field of characteristic not two and let \(V\) be a finite-dimensional \(F\)-vector space. Let \(E\) denote the algebra of linear operators on \(V\) and \(B\) the space of bilinear forms \(\varphi: V\times V \to F\). The author investigates the structure of the isometry group \(G\) of a bilinear space \((V,\varphi)\), where \(\varphi\in B\). Every \(\varphi\) admits an orthogonal direct decomposition. For a number of special cases the isometry groups are well known, where \(G\) is isomorphic to a direct product of the isometry groups of the primary components. In the general case two additional groups are involved. These are described in detail by the author.
