Consider \[ Tf(x,y) = \int_0^x \int_0^y f(u,v) dv\,du \] and a corresponding geometric mean operator \[ Gf(x,y) = e^{1/{xy}} \int_0^x \int_0^y \log f(u,v) dv\,du. \] \textit{E. Sawyer} [Stud. Math. 82, 1--16 (1985; Zbl 0585.42020)] showed that the Hardy-type inequality \(\| Tf\| _{L_u^q} \leq C \| f\| _{L_v^p}\) could be characterized by three independent conditions on the weights. In this paper, it is shown that in case the weight is of product type, only one condition is needed.
