The ``asymptotic consistency error associated to a modified bilinear finite-element approximation of a simple parameter-dependent elliptic problem, the problem of anisotropic heat conduction'' is considered. It is proved ``that, when approximating smooth solutions with bilinear finite elements, the consistency error due to the variational crime is negligible compared to the approximation error, whereas for nonsmooth solutions the performance of the finite-element scheme, as shown by a numerical example, depends on the mesh.''
