The authors consider the ordinary differential equation \(u''=a(x)u-b(x)u^p\), where \(p>1\) and \(a\) and \(b\) are positive functions. They are interested in positive solutions for which \(u(\infty)=0\). Suppose that \(\mu\leq a(x)\leq M\) and \(\nu\leq b(x)\leq N\) for all \(x\), and that \(a(\infty)=\alpha\), \(b(\infty)=\beta\). The authors prove that if \((M/\alpha)^{p+3}(\beta/\nu)^4<4^{p-1}\), then the differential equation above does have a positive solution for which \(u(\infty)=0\).
