The author studies systems consisting of arbitrary time shifts and arbitrary scale shifts of some wavelet in \(L^2({\mathbb R})\). For a large class of irregular wavelet frames, the author derives a fundamental relationship between the affine density of the set of indices, the frame bounds, and the admissibility constant of the wavelet. This interesting result has direct impact on the question of I. Daubechies, why wavelet systems do not satisfy a Nyquist phenomenon analogous to Gabor systems. In short, there is a critical density for the set of indices separating frames from nonframes, and the Riesz bases sit exactly at this critical density. Further, it is shown that the set of indices of an orthonormal wavelet basis has uniform affine density. Finally, affine density conditions can be used to characterize the existence of wavelet frames.
