For an \(n\times n\) complex matrix A, and \(1\leq p<\infty\) let \(\| A\|_ p=(\sum^{n}_{j=1}s_ j(A)^ p)^{(1/p)}\) be the p-norm of A, where \(s_ j(A)\) are the singular values of A. It is proved that \(trace(A)=0\) if and only if \(\| I-zA\|_ p\geq n^{(1/p)}\) for all \(z\in {\mathbb{C}}\) (here p is fixed). The result is false for \(p=\infty\) when the corresponding norm is interpreted as the operator norm.
