The book, a revised English translation of the author's 1985 monography, presents a broad, essentially verbal introduction into the ideas and models of the so-called French school of decision aid. Chapter 3 provides twelve examples of applications, which are developed in the following theoretical considerations. Chapter 11 includes a short treatment of outranking methods, in particular ELECTRE I. Unfortunately other outranking methods are not treated. A reader interested in the mathematical theory and methodology of decision aid should rather consult the original journal articles of the French school together with a standard textbook like \textit{S. French's} ``Decision theory: an introduction to the mathematics of rationality'' (Chichester 1986; Zbl 0589.90003).
