    An ill-posed problem is studied for the abstract equation \(u_{tt}=Au\), with \(u(0)=u_ 0\), \(u(\infty)=0\), where A is a normal linear operator defined on a suitable subset of a Hilbert space. Estimates for u are obtained by convexity arguments and these estimates are then used in the inverse problem for which approximations \(x_ i\), \(i=1,...,N\), are known to \(u(T_ i)\) and u(t) is sought for \(t\geq 0\). These writers suppose \[ (1)\quad Q_ 2(u_ 0)=\sum^{N}_{i=1}P_ i \| u(T_ i)-x_ i\|^ 2\leq \epsilon^ 2 \] for \(P_ 1+...+P_ N=1\), and where the norm denotes an appropriate \(L^ 2\)-norm. If \(\| u_ t(0)\| \leq E\), some known constants, a regularized solution, v(t), is constructed with \[ Q_ 2(v(0))\leq \epsilon^ 2,\quad \| u(0)-v(0)\| =O(\ln (E/\epsilon))^{-1}\quad and\quad \| u(t)-v(t)\| =O(\epsilon^{\beta (t)}) \] for an exponent \(0<\beta (t)<1\). Similar estimates are found when (1) is replaced by an equivalent estimate in the \(L^{\infty}\)-norm.
