Let \(X\) be a complex manifold. By \(c_X\) we denote the Carathéodory pseudodistance of \(X\), and by \(c_X^i\) the inner distance that is associated to \(c_X\). Let \(k_X\) denote the Kobayashi pseudodistance of \(X\). First the author derives a comparison theorem between \(c_X^i\) and \(c_U^i\), where \(U \subset X\) is open and relatively compact. Theorem 1. Let \(X\) denote a complex manifold that is hyperbolic with respect to \(c^i_X\) of \(X\). If \(U \subset X\) is an open relatively compact set of \(X\), then there exists a constant \(0<k<1\), such that for the infinitesimal Caratheodory metrics \(E_X\) of \(X\) and \(E_U\) of \(U\) the estimate \( E_X (a,v)\leq k \cdot E_U (a,v) \) exists for \(a \in U\) and \(v \in T_a U \). The number \(k\) is given as \(k= \tanh M\), where \(M\) denotes the diameter of \(U\) with respect to \(c_X\). In particular, one has \( c_X^i(a,b) \leq k \cdot c_U^i (a,b)\) for \(a,b \in U\). The next result is an application of this: Theorem 2. Let \(X\) be as in theorem 1 and \(f:X \to X\) a holomorphic mapping, such that \(f(X) \subset X\) is relatively compact. Then the sequence of iterates \((f^{\circ \, n} )_n\) of \(f\) converges towards the constant map \(f_0\equiv c\) in the compact-open topology, where \(c\) is the unique fixed point of \(f\). Also for the Kobayashi distance the author obtains a comparison theorem: Theorem 3. Given a Stein manifold \(A\), a Kobayashi hyperbolic domain \(X \subset A\), and an open relatively compact subset \(U \subset X\), then there exists a constant \(0<k<1\) such that for \(a,b \in U\) one has \( k_X(a,b) \leq k\cdot k_U(a,b)\). The article concludes with an application to iterates of holomorphic mappings that is similar to Theorem 2, namely: Theorem 4. Let \(A\) be a Stein manifold and \(X \subset A\) a Kobayashi hyperbolic domain. If \(f:X \to X\) is a holomorphic mapping such that \(f(X) \subset X\) is relatively compact, then the sequence of iterates \((f^{\circ \, n} )_n\) of \(f\) converges towards the constant map \(f_0\equiv c\) in the compact-open topology, where \(c\) is the unique fixed point of \(f\).
