This long paper develops a calculus, referred to as instanton calculus, to analyze in a detailed manner self-avoiding manifold (SAM). It appears that a combination of perturbation theory with a perturbative renormalization group analysis is very efficient to this end. The relations of the SAM model with large-order asymptotics are exhibited, and one examines the UV divergences and renormalization necessary for the instanton. Once the concept of instanton is put in evidence, one considers its relations between large orders of perturbation. One proposes a systematic framework to construct expansion in the vicinity of the variational approximation, and then one obtains \(1/d\) expansion for the instanton calculus. The paper concludes with the \(1/d\) expansion for the renormalized theory when the dimension of the coupling is zero, and some theoretical proofs are postponed in its appendix.
