    The paper is concerned with the C *-algebra of singular integral operators on a polycylinder \(\Omega ={\mathbb{R}}\) \(n\times B\) (B is a compact Riemannian manifold), the closure in the space \({\mathcal L}(L\) 2(\(\Omega)\)) of the algebra C 0 generated by \[ a(x).,\quad t_ j/| t|,\quad \Lambda =(1-\Delta)^{-1/2},\quad \partial_{t_ k}\Lambda,\quad D_ x\Lambda,\quad \Lambda D_ x \] \((t=(t_ 1,...,t_ n)\), \(x\in B)\); cf. \textit{H. O. Cordes} [Rev. Mat. Iberoam. 2, No.1/2, 215-234 (1987; Zbl 0626.46051)]. The author gives the following characterization of the Fréchet subalgebra \(C^{\infty}\subset C\), the closure of C 0 in the topology generated by all H s(\(\Omega)\) norms: \(C^{\infty}\) is the set of all \(A\in C\) such that \(\Lambda^{-2k}A\Lambda^{2k}-A\) lie in the closure of the set of commutators [C,C], for every \(k\in {\mathbb{Z}}\). This permits to characterize the symbols \(\sigma (C^{\infty})\) explicitly.
