In the paper under review a new topology of helical gears is developed that provides two types of contact: localized point contact in crowned areas when misalignments occur, and line contact in involute areas of tooth surfaces when misalignments do not occur. Crowned zones with smooth connections to the involute zone are obtained as the result of profile and longitudinal crowning. This is achieved by controlling of the motions of a grinding worm applied for gear generation. The design of the thread surfaces of the grinding worm is developed. The ideas of the proposed modification of tooth surfaces has been successfully confirmed by simulation of meshing of tooth surfaces accomplished by developed TCA (tooth contact analysis). Stress analysis of the new version of modified helical gears has been accomplished by application of a finite-element method.
