Implications of previous results of the author [ibid. 120, 328-353 (1986; Zbl 0611.93011)] on the class of all singular and regular linear time- invariant systems to control theory are examined. It is shown that controllability and observability are generic properties even when singular systems are included. Other subclasses of systems are examined and some are shown to not be generic. Finally, it is shown that the number of connected components of the controllable and observable sets is diminished whenever singular systems are included.
