The authors compare the Betti numbers of an ideal \(I\) in a polynomial ring over a field of characteristic \(0\) and the Betti numbers of its generic initial ideal \(\text{Gin}(I)\). The main result says that the equality of \(\beta_i(I)\) and \(\beta_i(\text{Gin}(I))\) implies the analogous equality for all \(j\geq i\). The same ``rigidity'' result holds for the comparison of \(I\) with the lex-segment ideal of the same Hilbert function and with a generic initial ideal obtained from an arbitrary term order. The authors also relate the Betti numbers of componentwise linear ideals \(I\subset J\) with the same Hilbert polynomial and the Betti numbers of the generic initial ideal of an irrelevant ideal generated by forms of constant degree \(d\) with those of the generic initial ideal of the corresponding complete intersection.
