Let \(\mathcal A\) be an abelian category. As is well known, the torsion pairs on \(\mathcal A\) give rise to a class of t-structures on the derived category \(D(\mathcal A)\). Localization of \(\mathcal A\) in the sense of Gabriel can be expressed in terms of Giraud subcategories \(\mathcal C\) of \(\mathcal A\), that is, reflective full subcategories with an exact reflector. The interaction between both concepts is studied in the paper. For example, the torsion pairs of \(\mathcal C\) can be identified with a subclass of the torsion pairs of \(\mathcal A\). On the other hand, for a fixed torsion pair of \(\mathcal A\), the heart of the corresponding t-structure gives another abelian category \(\mathcal B\). Then the Giraud subcategories of \(\mathcal A\) are related to the Giraud subcategories of \(\mathcal B\).
