This paper studies the numerical solution of general contact problems for which a finite element interpolation is applied. The solution approach involves a Lagrange multiplier to interpolate the unknown normal contact traction, such that the contact non-penetration constraint can be enforced. The stability requirements that the finite element discretization has to satisfy are discussed and analyzed. Moreover, the authors give insight into these requirements and specific results as to what Lagrange multiplier interpolation is appropriate and effective. Although the results of this paper are derived for a simple model problem (in order to avoid certain technicalities), valuable insight is gained and quite general conclusions could be allowed.
