The author studies the linear stability of radially dependent inviscid swirl flows with an axial component of motion. Following an asymptotic analysis valid for large wave numbers, it is shown the existence of a number of modes of instability and a discription of the higher modes is established. Besides of the study of these modes, which are difficult to generate numerically, the present paper confirms a number of observations obtained numerically for the model profile of the trailing line vortex.
