The authors construct a rational mapping \(F\) from \(\mathbb C^2\) to \(\mathbb P^2\) with the following properties:{\parindent=8mm \begin{itemize} \item[(i)] Its indeterminacy set is \(I_F=\{p_\pm:= (0,\pm 1) \}\), its divisor of poles is \(P_F=\{ w_2=\pm 1\}\) and the full images of \(p_\pm\) along the unit sphere \(\mathbb S^3\), \(F_{\mathbb S^3}[p_\pm]\), are singletons, that is \(F|_{\mathbb S^3}\) is continuous.\item [(ii)] The proper image \(K:= F_{\mathbb S^3}\mathbb S^3\) of the unit sphere \(\mathbb S^3\) under \(F\) does not contain any germ of a non-constant complex curve, but is not smooth.\item [(iii)] \(K\) is contained in the affine part \(\mathbb C^2\) of \(\mathbb P^2\). \end{itemize}} This example is motivated by a result by Pinchuk stating that for a germ \(M\) of a real analytic hypersurface in \(\mathbb C^n\) and a germ \(F\) of a meromorphic mapping near \(M\), such that \(F_M[M]\subset \mathbb C^{2N-1}\), \(2\leq n\leq N\), \(F\) is holomorphic near \(M\). It shows that the conclusion may not hold if the set \(K=\mathbb S^3\) is replaced by a non-smooth set. The authors also show that such \(F\) is holomorphic if both \(M\) and \(K\) are strictly pseudoconvex and \(n=N\).
