The authors determine a \((\nu,\omega)\) domain in which the symmetric successive overrelaxation (SSOR) method is superior to SOR for \(M\)- matrices. It is also shown that the optimal SOR iteration parameter is 1. For a general \(p\)-cyclic, \(p \geq 3\) matrix they also determine regions where the asymptotic rate of convergence of the block SSOR method is superior to that of the block SOR method.
