Assuming that an error \(e\) is a sum of a large number of independent component errors, it is shown that the set \(E\) of its possible values is close to an interval \(\overline {E}\). The smaller the components are, the smaller is the Hausdorff distance between \(E\) and \(\overline{E}\). This constitutes an analogy with limit theorems of mathematical statistics and justifies the use of intervals in data processing.
