Let \(\overline{M}_g\) be the compactification of the moduli space of smooth projective curves of genus \(g\ge 2\). For \(G\) a semisimple linear algebraic group and \(X\) a stable curve in \(\overline{M}_g\) one has a moduli space of semistable principal \(G\)-bundles. The way this space varies when the curve moves in \(\overline{M}_g\) is related to the question of the existence of a compactification of ``the universal moduli space of principal \(G\)-bundles over \(\overline{M}_g\)''. This problem was studied by \textit{R. Pandharipande} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 9, No. 2, 425--471 (1996; Zbl 0886.14002)] for \(G=GL_r\). In this paper, the author generalizes the study to any \(G\) a semisimple linear algebraic group. One of the main tools in this paper is the concept of \textit{swamp} (cf. the definition in the paper). The paper gives all the required references, is very well written, well motivated.
