Let \(\Omega\) be an arbitrary domain in \(\mathbb{C}^ N\). In the paper under review, the author proves that the closure, in the strong operator topology, of the set \(S=\bigl\{T_ \varphi\mid\varphi\in L^ \infty(\Omega)\bigr\}\), where \(T_ \varphi\) is the Toeplitz operator with symbol \(\varphi\), contains all bounded linear operators and its norm closure contains all compact ones (see Section 2). An important ingredient of the proof is based on an interpolation property of Toeplitz operators (Theorem 2). The remaining sections of the paper deal with algebras generated by Toeplitz operators. In particular, the author shows that even the \(C^*\)-algebra generated by \(S\) does not contain all bounded linear operators. This result gives a negative answer to a conjecture of Berger and Coburn.
