[For part II see the authors, ibid. 65, 368-405 (1986; Zbl 0639.49021).] The authors continue their study of Hamilton-Jacobi equations in infinite dimensions. In the first section they obtain existence and uniqueness results under relaxation of the Radon-Nikoým property on the Banach space. Instead of viscosity solutions they use strict viscosity solutions with the methods of the previous papers. The second section contains three diverse parts: existence theorems for coercive Hamiltonians, examples showing the dramatic failure of the basic Faedo-Galerkin method, and certain Hamilton-Jacobi equations arising in the optimal control of evolution equations.
