The authors prove that a sequence whose asymptotic distribution of pair correlations is Poissonian must necessarily be uniformly distributed. This is the fist rigorous proof of a fact which was known to experts as a ``folklore'' result. Furthermore, for uniformly distributed sequences it is shown that the square-integral of the asymptotic density of the sequence gives a lower bound for the asymptotic distribution of the pair correlations. The proofs depend on a Fourier-analytic approach.
