The authors investigate sphere packings arising from families of lattices which are derivated from one of them under the action of the closed subgroup of the linear group. Theory of Lie groups leads to a characterization of the local maxima of the sphere packing density which contains several known results. The authors then apply their methods to Conway's and Sloane's isodual lattices.
