In this comprehensive paper, the authors discuss the recently developed techniques for studying multi-dimensional uniformly hyperbolic systems. They describe three approaches to the problem of extending this theory to nonuniform hyperbolicity. The first approach (the symbolic approach) is used to find a countable Markov partition, or the related tools of a Young tower or a more general inducing scheme. By using this approach, the authors establish the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium measures and study their statistical properties including decay of correlations and the Central Limit Theorem. The authors study the second approach to avoid the issue of building a Markov partition by adapting Bowen's specification property to the nonuniformly hyperbolic setting. The second approach is similar to the symbolic approach. The authors introduce the geometric approach based on pushing forward the leaf volume on unstable manifolds by the dynamics. By using the geometric approach the authors establish the existence of Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen measures for uniformly hyperbolic and some nonuniformly hyperbolic attractors. Lastly, the authors discuss their application to open problems in the thermodynamics of nonuniformly hyperbolic systems.
