Let \(A\) be a central simple algebra of degree \(n\) and \(X=SB(A)\) be the Severi-Brauer variety of \(A\) of dimension \(n-1\), where \(n\) is the degree of \(A\). Here \(X\) is taken as a subvariety of the Grassmannian \(Gr(n,A)\). Let \(K(X)\) be the Grothendieck ring of locally free sheaves on \(X\) and \(G(X)\) the Grothendieck ring of coherent sheaves on \(X\). There is an obvious isomorphism between these two groups. We have the \(\gamma\)-filtration on \(K(X)\), arising from the \(\gamma\) operations on \(K(X)\), this gives the terms \(gr_{\gamma}^{i}K(X)=\gamma^{i}/\gamma^{i+1}\) and therefore \(gr_{\gamma}(X)=\oplus_{i\geq 0}gr_{\gamma}^{i}K(X)\). On the other hand there is a filtration, the coniveu filtration, for \(G(X)\) given by certain ideals \(\tau^{i}\subset G(X), i\geq 0\). This gives the graded ring \(gr_{\tau}=\oplus_{i\geq 0} gr^{i}_{\tau} G(X)\). In general these graded rings may not be isomorphic, one of the main results of this work is that \(X\) may be enlarged to a variety \(Y\) where the \(\gamma\)-gradings \(gr_{\gamma}K(X)\) and \(gr_{\gamma}K(Y)\) are isomorphic and the comparison map \(gr_{\gamma}G(Y)\to gr_{\tau} G(Y)\) is also an isomorphism. This procedure is called by the Author a \(\tau\)-\textsl{functorial replacement} for \(X\). One of the main theorems is the following Theorem 4.11. Let \(A\) be a central simple algebra. Then, there exists a Severi-Brauer variety \(Y\) that is a \(\tau\)-functorial replacement for \(X=SB(A)\). The second main result of this paper is the computation of the terms in the \(\gamma\)-filtration for \(X=SB(A)\) and in low homological degrees.
