The following simple network is investigated: There is an M/M/1/\(\infty\) queue under FCFS and in addition to the external customers from the Poisson input stream one customer from a finite (exponential) source requests for service at the server. His service time is exponentially distributed with different parameter; therefore no product-form steady state exists for the queue-length distribution. The generating function of the joint distribution of queue-length and position of the finite source customer is derived and mean values of the usual performance measures are obtained from it.
