For a ring \(R\) let \(\text{St}(R)\), \(\text{GL}(R)\) and \(\text{E}(R)\) denote the Steinberg group of \(R\), the stable general linear group over \(R\) and the stable elementary group over \(R\), respectively. Given two groups \(G\) and \(H\) let \(\text{Iso}(G,H)\) denote the set of isomorphisms from \(G\) to \(H\). The main results of the paper are as follows: Let \(A\) and \(R\) be commutative rings with 1. Then there are natural 1-1 correspondences between \(\text{Iso}(\text{St}(A), \text{St}(R))\), \(\text{Iso}(\text{GL}(A), \text{GL}(R))\) and \(\text{Iso}(\text{E}(A), \text{E}(R))\). Moreover, these sets are non-empty if and only if the rings \(A\) and \(R\) are isomorphic.
