Let G be a finitely generated Fuchsian group of the first kind and \(A(G)=\oplus_{i\geq 0}A_ i(G)\) be the graded ring of automorphic forms. Let m be the maximal ideal \(\oplus_{i>0}A_ i(G)\). Then \(m/m^ 2\) is a finite dimensional graded vector space; let \(p_ G\) be the corresponding Poincaré polynomial. In the main theorem of this paper the author determines \(p_ G\) explicitly in terms of the signature of G. This is proved by algebraic-geometric methods; the title refers to the fact that A(G) is two-dimensional with a \({\mathbb{C}}^ x\)-action which the author analyses in detail as an essential part of the proof. As an application the author determines all the signatures for which A(G) is generated by at most four elements and the degrees of the generating relations between these generators.
