The Academy of Sciences of Moldova (Moldavia) had its beginning in 1946, the Institute of Mathematics within it took its present form in 1964. The current director of the Institute has prepared this account of work in computer science or informatics that began in 1962 when the first modern computers appeared in Moldova. Some statistics for the Institute as a whole are given: 200 doctoral and 21 doctor-habilitat degrees have been given, 2 journals are published and a series of monographs and reports have been issued. In a five-page survey the author gives the principal specialities in computer science along with the names of those members who have worked in those fields: parallel processes, natural language processing, simulation system design, and artificial intelligence. The remainder of the article lists detailed information about each of the 31 doctoral theses in computer science, as well as all the publications, conferences, and workshops given in the subject.
