The author studies metric properties of symmetric divergences on \(n\times n\) positive definite matrices. These matrices form a symmetric space if we identify it with \(\mathrm {GL}_n({\mathbb C})/\mathrm {U}(n)\) via polar decomposition, where \(\mathrm {GL}_n({\mathbb C})\) is the general linear group and \(\mathrm {U}(n)\) is the unitary group of \(n\times n\) matrices. In particular, it is a smooth manifold. It is proved that the square root of these divergences is a metric. It is different from the Riemannian metric induced by the natural Riemannian structure on \(\mathrm {GL}_n({\mathbb C})/\mathrm {U}(n)\). As a corollary, the author provides a proof of the metric property for quantum Jensen-Shannon-(Tsallis) divergences (parameterized by \(\alpha\in [0, 2]\)). When \(\alpha = 1\), he provides a proof of the metric property of the quantum Jensen-Shannon divergence that was conjectured in [\textit{P. Lamberti} et al., Phys. Rev. A 77, 052311 (5) (2008)], and also recently proved in [\textit{D. Virosztek}, Adv. Math. 380, Article ID 107595, 9 p. (2021; Zbl 1462.81026)].
