The authors prove some results related to work of the first author and the reviewer [Pitman Res. Notes Math. Ser., 305, 136-146 (1994; Zbl 0826.30027). For \(f\) analytic in the unit disk \(D\), let \(\varphi (z) = \sum^\infty_{n = 2} a_n z^n\) be an entire function with \(a_n \geq 0\), where \(\varphi\) has order \(\rho \leq 1\), and, if \(\rho = 1\) then \(\sigma\), the type of \(\varphi\), satisfies \(\sigma < 2\). Now let \(I_{\varphi, a} = \int \int_D |f'(z) |^2 \varphi (g(z,a)) dA(z)\), where \(g(z,a)\) is the Green's function in \(D\) with singularity at \(a \in D\) and \(dA(z)\) is the element of planar area. The authors' main result is that a function \(f\) is a Bloch function if and only if \(\sup \{I_{\varphi, a} : a \in D\} < \infty\), and that \(f\) is in the little Bloch space \(B_0\) if and only if \(\lim_{|a |\to 1} I_{\varphi, a} = 0\). Corresponding characterizations are given for functions which are in the class \(N\) of normal functions and also for functions in the class \(N_0\).
