In this short note the authors define rational functions in the quaternions using Fueter polynomials and the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya product. Such a rational function is realizable, if it may be represented in a certain matrix form. The principal result of the paper is, that a quaternionic function is rational if and only if it is realizable.
