For a set of vectors \(\xi_ 1,...,\xi_ n\) in \(R^ m\) the box-spline \(M:R^ m\to R\) was defined by \textit{C. de Boor} and \textit{R. A. DeVore} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 276, 775-788 (1983)] via the relation \[ \int_{R^ m}M(x)\phi(x)dx=\int_{[0,1]^ n}\phi(\sum^{n}_{\nu =1}y_{\nu}\xi_{\nu})dy. \] We study the approximation properties of the space \(S:=span\{M(\cdot -j): j\in Z^ m\}\) which can be viewed as a generalized of univariate cardinal splines. Our main result is a characterization of the polynomials which are contained in S in terms of kernels of homogeneous differential operators. As a consequence we determine the optimal order of approximation from \(S_ h:=\{s(\cdot /h):\) \(s\in S\}\). Moreover, we give a necessary condition for the linear independence of the translates of box-splines. The sufficiency of this condition was recently shown by \textit{R.-Q. Jia} [see the article reviewed below] and independently by \textit{W. Dahmen} and \textit{C. A. Micchelli} [Linear Algebra Appl. 52, 217-234 (1983)].
