The authors describe a general preconditioning technique for solving Galerkin systems of first kind boundary integral equations which is based on a boundary integral operator of opposite order. The spectral equivalence inequalities are independent of the underlying discretization. This is confirmed by numerical tests for boundary integral equations of order 1 and \(-1\) for the Laplace and elasticity equations.
