Arthur's endoscopic classification is the keystone in the proof of the local Langlands correspondence for the symplectic groups and orthogonal groups. The authors are interested in extending Arthur's endoscopic classification to the split exceptional group \(\mathrm{G}_2\) and this is their first paper on this project. In the paper under review, the authors consider the endoscopic classification of unipotent representation of \(\mathrm{G}_2(F)\), where \(F\) is a non-Archimedean local field. To be more precise, the authors to construct candidates (the so-called ABV-packets) for \(\mathrm{G}_2\) in the case when these candidate packets contain representations for which the component group of the corresponding Langlands parameter is the symmetric group \(S_3\). The authors also show that the distributions attached to these packets are stable, subject to a hypothesis.
