This volume is an excellent introduction to the main topics on polynomials. The author presents both classical and modern subjects. From the various topics on polynomials he selected the following: the distribution of the roots of a given polynomial and their derivatives, separation of roots, estimation of roots (Chapter 1); irreducibility criteria (Chapter 2); symmetric, integer valued, cyclotomic, Chebyshev and Bernoulli polynomials (Chapter 3); polynomials with prescribed values, polynomial sizes, equations on polynomials, polynomial transforms, algebraic numbers (Chapter 4); Galois theory (Chapter 5); Hilbert's basis theorem and Hilbert's Nullstellensatz, Gröbner bases (Chapter 6); Hilbert's 17th problem (Chapter 6) and the LLL algorithm (Appendix). Each chapter contains a list of selected problems and their solutions. The book includes a rich bibliography and an useful index. It will be usuful for undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics. The first Russian ed. was published in 1999 (Moscow: MTsNMO).
