In this paper the computer calculation of the 2- and 3-modular character tables of the simple sporadic group \(J_ 3\) of Janko, and its associated covering and automorphism groups is described. These modular character tables are displayed in the form of Atlas-style compound tables (see \textit{J. H. Conway} et. al. [``Atlas of finite groups'' (Oxford, 1985; Zbl 0568.20001)]). The decomposition matrices and Cartan matrices are given, omitting the blocks of defect 0 and 1. The Brauer trees for the primes 5, 17 and 19 have been calculated by \textit{W. Feit} [Lect. Notes Math. 1178, 25-63 (1986; Zbl 0625.20010)] up to one or two ambiguities in the irrationalities (see also \textit{G. Hiss} and \textit{K. Lux} [``Brauer trees of sporadic groups'' (Oxford, 1989; Zbl 0685.20013)]). The methods used are essentially those described by \textit{R. A. Parker} [Computational group theory, 1982, 267-274 (1984; Zbl 0555.20001)], together with the technique of ``condensation'', due to R. A. Parker.
