Let \(H(k,r)\subset {\mathbb{P}}^{(k+1)(r+1)-1}\) be the image of \({\mathbb{P}}^ r\times {\mathbb{P}}^ k\) under the Segre map. The authors announce some results about the projective geometry of the varieties \(H(k,r)\). The family of its k-dimensional planes is an r-dimensional subvariety of the Grassmannian \(G=G(k+1,(k+1)(r+1))\). It coincides with the Veronese variety \(v_ k({\mathbb{P}}^ r)\subset {\mathbb{P}}^{\binom{k+r+1}{k+1}-1}\), equal to the section of G in its Plücker embedding by a subspace of dimension \(\binom{k+r+1}{k+1}-1\). The Schubert variety of k-planes in \({\mathbb{P}}^{(k+1)(r+1)-1}\) which intersect a fixed k-dimensional generator P of \(H(k,r)\) in a subspace of codimension 1 is canonically isomorphic to the cone over \(H(k,r)\).
