The main idea of the presented monograph is to deal with mathematical models connected with mechanical systems under unilateral constraints. Most attention is devoted to the interaction of deformed solids. The elastic and nonelastic deformations including friction and adhesion phenomena are taken into account. Mathematical tools like boundary value problem formulations, constructions of variational and quasi-variational inequalities, the minimization problems, existence and uniqueness theorems, and variational transformations to dual and saddle point problems are given. New results are obtained in contact problems with friction. Mostly Coulomb friction law with relative sliding velocities is considered. The corresponding quasi-variational inequality is constructed as well as an iterative method for its solution. Mainly stationary problems are investigated but also the variational approach to nonstationary and dissipative problems are given. Examples of analytical and numerical solutions are presented. Numerical solutions were obtained using the finite element and boundary element methods. The book contains eight chapters. Chapter 1 is devoted to notations and mathematical tools. In chapter 2, the equilibrium of linear systems is considered. Chapter 3 is devoted to nonlinear smooth systems without unilateral constraints. Problems with unilateral constraints are investigated in chapter 4. The equivalence of local frictionless contact problems with the minimum problems is explained. Laws of Coulomb-type include the relative sliding velocity of particles on contact surfaces. The corresponding variational formulation is a quasi-variational inequality. Transformations of variational principles are considered in chapter 5. The method of Friedrichs transformation permits to find the equilibrium and the mixed and hybrid variational principles. In chapter 6 the nonstationary problems are considered. Chapter 7 is devoted to solution methods, algorithms and their implementation. Some modern research directions are outlined in chapter 8. The text contains a big amount of latest results achieved in mathematical modeling of contact problems in mechanics together with applications. It can be recommended both to graduate students and the researchers in applied mathematics and mechanics.
