    The paper is connected with the nonhomogeneous Cauchy problem \[ \frac{du}{dt}=Au\left( t\right) +f\left( t\right) ,\;t\in\left[ 0,\tau_{0}\right] ,\;u\left( 0\right) =x\in\overline{D\left( A\right) }, \] where \(A:D\left( A\right) \subset X\rightarrow X\) is a linear nondensely defined operator on a Banach space \(X,\) \(D\left( A\right) \) is its domain, and \(f\in L^{1}\left( \left( 0,\tau_{0}\right) ;X\right) .\) One supposes that the part \(A_{0}\) of \(A\) in \(X_{0}=\overline{D\left( A\right) }\) is the infinitesimal generator of a strongly continuous semigroup of bounded linear operators on \(X_{0},\) denoted by \(\left\{ T_{A_{0}}\left( t\right) \right\} _{t\geq0}.\) Let \(L:\overline{D\left( A\right) }\rightarrow X\) be a bounded linear operator. The main result of the paper establishes that, under some specific hypotheses, if \(\omega_{0,ess}\left( A_{0}\right) \) and \(\omega_{0,ess}\left( (A+L)_{0}\right) \) are the essential growth rate of \(\left\{ T_{A_{0}}\left( t\right) \right\} _{t\geq0}\)\ and \(\left\{ T_{(A+L)_{0}}\left( t\right) \right\} _{t\geq0},\)\ respectively, then \(\omega_{0,ess}\left( (A+L)_{0}\right) \leq\omega_{0,ess}\left( A_{0}\right) .\) This result can be applied to age-structured problems in \(L^{p}\) and to neutral functional differential equations in \(L^{p}.\)
