On a manifold the commutator of any vector field with itself vanishes. This is no longer true for supermanifolds, where the supercommutator of a vector field with itself is not necessarily zero. An odd vector field \(V\) on a supermanifold is called a homological vector field, if the super commutator of \(V\) with itself is zero. Homological vector fields play an important role in the theory of supermanifolds. The author presents results of his systematic study of homological vector fields, including theorems on de Rham cohomology, normal forms and singularities. The results indicate that the theory of local normal forms of homological vector fields is similar to the classification of singularities of smooth functions. A detailed exposition is announced to appear elsewhere.
