The article is devoted to investigation of so-called \(q\)-Szász Mirakyan operators introduced recently by one of the authors. These operators are defined in the following way. For \(f\in C\left[0,\infty\right)\), \(q\in\left(0,1\right)\) and each natural \(n\) \[ S_n^q\left(f;x\right)\equiv S_n^q\left(f\right)\left(x\right)= E_q\left(-\left[n\right]_q{x\over{b_n}}\right) \sum_{k=0}^\infty f\left({\left[k\right]_q b_n\over{\left[n\right]_q}}\right) {\left(\left[n\right]_q x\right)^k\over{\left[k\right]!\left(b_n\right)^k}}, \] where \(0\leq x<{b_n\over{1-q^n}}\), \(\left\{b_n\right\}\) is a sequence of positive numbers such that \(\lim_{n\to\infty}b_n=\infty\) and \[ E_q\left(x\right)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty q^{n\left(n-1\right)/2}{x^n\over{\left[n\right]_q!}}. \] Here the authors also use the standard notations of \(q\)-calculus: \[ \left[n\right]_q:=1+q+q^2+\dots+q^n={1-q^n\over{1-q}}, (n\in{\mathbb N}),\quad \left[0\right]_q=0 \] for \(q\in{\mathbb R}_+\setminus\left\{1\right\}\), \(n\in{\mathbb Z}_+\), \(\left[n\right]_1=n\), and \[ \left[n\right]_q!:=\left[1\right]_q\left[2\right]_q\dots\left[n\right]_q\,\,(n\in{\mathbb N}), \quad\left[0\right]_q!=1. \] First, the authors establish some results on connection between \(q\)-derivatives with divided differences and \(q\)-differences. Then, they study the convexity of \(q\)-Szász Mirakyan operators of order \(r\) on \(\left[0,\infty\right)\) as an application of \(q\)-derivatives of order \(r\). The convergence of \(r\)-th order \(q\)-derivatives of \(S_n^q\left(f\right)\) as \(n\to\infty\) and \(q\to 1\) to the \(q\)-derivatives of the respective order of the approximated function is investigated. The authors also obtain a Voronovskaya-type theorem for monomials of \(q\)-derivatives of \(S_n^q\left(f\right)\). In the last section, the authors give a Stancu-type remainder of \(S_n^q\left(f\right)\) and a connection between two nonconsecutive terms involving \(q\)-addition of \(S_n^q\left(f\right)\). As an interesting corollary, it is proved that if \(f\) is convex, then \[ S_n^q\left(f;x\right)\geq f\left(x\right)\quad\text{for }n\in{\mathbb Z}_+\text{ and all } q\in\left(0,1\right). \] The article also contains some interesting discussions and an open problem posed at the end. An extended bibliography reflects several results obtained in this area.
