Let \(b\in N\), \(b\geq 2\). For \(A\subseteq [0,1]\) denote by \(A_ n\) the set of all n-tuples \((x_ 1,x_ 2,\cdot \cdot \cdot,x_ n)\) which can be obtained in the following way: If \(x\in A\) and \(x=0.a_ 1a_ 2\cdot \cdot \cdot a_ na_{n+1}\cdot \cdot \cdot\) is the representation of x in the scale of b then \(x_ i=0.a_ ia_{i+n}a_{i+2n}\cdot \cdot \cdot\) \((i=1,2,\cdot \cdot \cdot,n).\) The set A is said to have the Stoilow dimension 1 (with respect to the scale of b) if at least one of the projections of the set \(A_ 2\) on the coordinate axes is not a null set (in the sense of the Lebesgue measure). The set A is said to have the Stoilow dimension \(n\geq 2\) with respect to the scale of b (shortly \(St(A,b)=n)\) if \(St(A,b)\neq k\) \((k=1,2,\cdot \cdot \cdot,n-1)\) and at least one of the projections of the set \(A_{n+1}\) on the coordinate axes is not a null set. If \(St(A,b)\neq n(n=1,2,...)\) then we write \(St(A,b)=\infty.\) It is obvious that \(St(A,b)=\infty\) if A is a countable set. This statement cannot be conversed. For each \(\epsilon >0\) there exists an \(F_{\sigma}\)-set A having the cardinality c (the power of continuum), dense in \([0,1]\) with \(St(A,b)=\infty\) and Hausdorff dimension greater than \(1-\epsilon.\) Further to each \(b\geq 2\) and \(n\in N\) the class of all A with \(St(A,b)=n\) is nonvoid. S. Marcus has introduced the notion of Darboux property of a family of sets [\textit{S. Marcus}, Rev. Roum. Math. Pures Appl. 22, 1149- 1151 (1977; Zbl 0391.68039)]. If \({\mathcal F}_ n\) denotes the class of all A with \(St(A,b)=n\) for a suitable \(b\geq 2\) then the family \(\{{\mathcal F}_ n\}_ n\) has not the Darboux property. An the end of the paper several interesting problems are formulated.
