    Let W(D) denote the Wiener algebra consisting of all functions \(f(z)=\sum^{\infty}_{n=0}a_ nz^ n\) for which \(\| f\| =\sum^{\infty}_{n=0}| a_ n| <\infty\). It is well known that the set \(\{z^ n\}^{\infty}_{n=0}\) of successive shifts of the function 1 is a (Schauder) basis for W(D). It is now a natural problem to study the basis behavior of more general shift sequences in W(D). In this paper the author proves the following interesting theorem: Let \(f_ 1,...,f_ n\) be functions in W(D). Then the following assertions are equivalent: i) The generalized shift sequence \(\{f_ 1(z)z^{kn},f_ 2(z)z^{kn+1},...,f_ n(z)z^{(k+1)n-1}\}^{\infty}_{\quad k=0}\) is a basis for W(D) which is equivalent to the basis \(\{z_ n\}^{\infty}_{n=0},\) ii) The generalized shift sequence above is complete; i.e. the linear span of the sequence is dense in W(D), iii) If \(w=\exp (2\pi i/n)\), then the function \[ F(z)= \det \begin{pmatrix} f_ 1(z)& f_ 1(wz)&...& f_ 1(w^{n-1}z)\\ \vdots&\vdots&&\vdots \\ f_ k(z)& w^{k-1}f_ k(wz)&...& (w^{k-1})^{n-1}f_ k(w^{n- 1}z)) \\ \vdots&\vdots&&\vdots \\ f_ n(z)& w^{n-1}f_ n(wz)& ...& (w^{n-1})^{n-1}f_ n(w^{n-1}z) \end{pmatrix} \] has no zero in \(\{z\in {\mathbb{C}}: | z| \leq 1\}\).
