Let \((X,d)\) be a cone metric space in the sense of [\textit{L.-G. Huang} and \textit{X. Zhang}, J. Math.\ Anal.\ Appl.\ 332, No.\ 2, 1468--1476 (2007; Zbl 1118.54022)], let \(\preceq\) be the corresponding order, and let \(f:X\to X\). Assume that there exist \(u\in X\) and \(k\in[0,1)\) such that \(d(fx,fy)\preceq kw\) for any \(x\), \(y=fx\) from \(O(u,f)\) (the orbit of \(f\) at the point~\(u\), which is assumed to be complete) and for some \[ w\in M(x,y)=\{d(x,y),d(x,fx),d(y,fy),\frac12[d(x,fy)+d(y,fx)],\frac12[d(x,fx)+d(y,fy)]\}. \] The authors prove that the sequence \(\{f^nx\}\) converges to a point \(v\in X\) which is a fixed point of \(f\), provided that \(f\) is orbitally continuous. Several corollaries are stated and two examples presented in order to show the usefulness of this result. Another two fixed point results, concerned with the so-called \((\psi, \phi)\)-contractions are proved, under the hypothesis that the underlying cone is regular. As an application, a result on the existence of a solution for an Urysohn integral equation is presented. Further, an existence result for nonexpansive mappings on a cone metric space is proved and, as an application, some invariant approximation results are obtained.
