The monotone closure of the solutions of an elliptic boundary value problem with discontinuous nonlinearities is studied. First, an embedding of the original discontinuous problem into continuous ones is considered with the aim to construct uniform upper and lower bounds for the solutions of the discontinuous problem. Next, these regularizations are approximated by inner iterations using linear elliptic boundary problems. The rate of convergence of the proposed approximation is estimated under additional assumptions. A numerical solution of a two-dimensional discontinuous elliptic boundary value problem illustrates the corresponding smoothing and iteration.
