Define the systole of a Riemannian manifold \(M^ n\) to be the shortest length of a noncontractible curve in \(M^ n\). Let \(\mathcal C\) be a class of conformally equivalent metrics on \(M\). A conformal isosystolic inequality then asserts that \(\text{vol}(g) \geq \text{Constant }(\text{systole}(g))^ n\) for all \(g\in {\mathcal C}\). The author studies metrics that minimize volume for a fixed systole. Applying the method of extremal lengths, he obtains a characterization of such metrics in terms of measures on the collection of minimizing curves. He examines in detail the case of surfaces and graphs.
