A compact set \(E\subset {\mathbb{R}}^ n\) satisfies a ``Whitney cube condition'' with continuous increasing function h: (0,\(\infty)\to (0,\infty)\) if \(N_ k\leq h(k)\) for sufficiently large k. Here \(N_ k\) is the number of the cubes with edge length \(2^{-k}\) in the Whitney decomposition of \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\setminus E\). A characterization of the Minkowski dimension, Hausdorff dimension, fractal dimension and a convertion of zero of p-capacity for compact sets are obtained in terms of ``Whitney's cube condition''. These results are used for estimates of the Hausdorff dimension of boundaries of uniform and John domains. There are also applications of these results for the extension of quasiconformal mappings of uniform domains to homeomorphisms between its closures.
